California Eligibility

Check this before you pay anyone.

California only masks one traffic school conviction per 18 months, counted violation date to violation date. Taking the course when you aren't eligible means the conviction lands on your record anyway and the fees aren't refunded.

You're likely eligible
  • You hold a valid non-commercial (Class C) license — out-of-state licenses are fine
  • The citation is for an eligible 1-point moving violation
  • You've paid the court's fine and traffic school fee
  • You haven't completed traffic school for a violation in the past 18 months
It won't help if
  • The violation is a major 2-point offense — DUI or reckless driving. Courts can't send those to traffic school for masking.
  • You were driving a commercial vehicle when you were cited.
  • You already have a traffic school completion inside the 18-month window.
  • You hold a commercial license — you can still take the course, but the conviction isn't kept confidential, though no point is counted toward negligent-operator status.

Not sure? Call 800-772-0682 with your citation in hand and we'll go through it with you. Vehicle Code §1808.7 governs masking; your court decides your referral and deadline.

The Course

Eight chapters on California driving, written to be read.

Content is specific to the California Vehicle Code — not a national defensive-driving course with a California label on it.

Chapter 1–2

Your citation and the court

What masking actually means, the 18-month rule, and how the DMV point system treats your violation.

Chapter 3–4

Speed, right-of-way, signals

The basic speed law, California's rules at intersections and crosswalks, and the violations that get cited most.

Chapter 5–6

Freeways, lanes and sharing the road

Merging, HOV rules, motorcycles and lane splitting, bicycles, and the Move Over law.

Chapter 7–8

Impairment, distraction and the final

Hands-free law, DUI consequences, collision avoidance — then the open-book final exam.

California questions

Is my ticket erased?

No school can erase a ticket. An eligible conviction is masked — held confidential so insurers can't see it — and no negligent-operator point is counted against you. A judge can still see it if you're cited again inside 18 months.

How long does it take?

As long as you need. There are no timers, so most students read straight through in one sitting and take the final the same day.

Do I mail the certificate to the court?

No. We submit your completion to the DMV and your court electronically the same day you finish, at no charge, and email you a copy for your records.

Can I take it twice in a year?

You can take the course, but California masks only one traffic school conviction per 18-month period, measured from violation date to violation date. A second one inside that window is unmasked and a point is charged.

What if I miss my court deadline?

Ask the court that sentenced you for an extension — the DMV has no authority to grant one. Call us and we'll tell you where you stand before you miss it.
